Extend Coach Rajko Toroman?

The Smart Gilas program has been extended to two more years, in time for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship as qualifier for the 2014 FIBA World Championship. But the contract of Coach Rajko Toroman is until after the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship only.

Do you think Smart Gilas should extend the contract of Rajko Toroman or do you think another local or foreign coach should handle Smart Gilas in the next two years? Who do you think should handle Smart Gilas in case Coach Rajko Toroman’s contract is not extended?

Possible Replacements:
-Tim Cone (With his recent resignation in Alaska, he is a possible option and has experience handling a National Team)
-Chot Reyes (Head Coach of Talk N Text, who almost had a grand slam)
-Ryan Gregorio (Current assistant coach of Smart Gilas and Head Coach of Meralco Bolts)
-Norman Black (Head Coach of Ateneo, which is on its way to its 4th straight title)

I hope not, I mean Smart Gilas wouldnt be this good if it werent for Mr. Toroman, but if its inevitable, the coach that I would love to see coaching the Gilas would be Tim Cone. Cone being the winningest coach in PBA plus known on using the triangle, I believe that he could bring us closer to what we all Filipino basketball fans want, GOLD MEDALS! Although I hope they would still continue drafting college players rather than PBA stars.

Tim Cone? Are you joking? yes he may be a good coach here in the Philippines but what exposure does he have internationally. What, he’ll bring the triangle offense to Gilas? Then we may just go after Tex Winter and have him coach Gilas instead. Please be sensible… coaching is not just barking… it’s strategy… The next Gilas coach should know the tendencies of the opposing coach so as they can strategize a good game day gameplan. He should be familiar with FIBA rules… I think even Cone admitted in the past, when he coached the Centennial Team, of his unfamiliarity with international rules… If MVP is not bringing Toroman back, they may as well talk with the coach of South Korea… they have the same materials as we have but they are doing well in international competitions.

I believe that Tim Cone is the most qualified coach right now to handle the RP team. His vast experienced will help further, Norman Black can assist him and Ryah Gregorion could assist him..Good luck!

One reason why Philippine basketball is not progressing in international competition is because we always change something (either the coach or players) if we don’t win… So I say keep the coach, and add Tim Cone as assistant coach so he could learn Toroman’s program before he can take over

Better to extend Rayko Toroman, he is better than other coaches her in the Ph, I like the ran and gun style of play. Tim Cone is good but PBA style of play and it will not work in the international competition. I like all shooter players because its easy to learn good defense but hard to be a good shooter. We got 3rd place in Jones cup because most players are shooters.

  5. DAPAT KOREANO PARA MAS OKEY NA COACH…SAKA PAKAININ SILA NG KIMCHI

I think Coach Toroman should be extended for as long as there will be a Smart-Gilas program. He has done quite a great job handling the team, inspite the fact that players of the team are not the best players we have in this country. Can you imagine if he was able to get the right players for our national team, I think we could have been champions in every tournament that the Smart-Gilas participated right from the start.
If the Smart-Gilas program will be terminated in the near future, I think Toroman deserves a slot coaching in one of the PBA teams.

Coach Rajko Toroman should stay. He did something great for our country. Even he doesn’t have the our best basketball player in this tournament he has done something really good. Maybe if we the other teams will give their best player to help our national team Maybe and I really hope so we will be champions. 🙂
