Leading nations, exciting multiple host candidacies headline bids for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023

FIBA has confirmed the shortlist of candidates in the running to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023.

Russia and Turkey, who have storied and successful basketball traditions at both European and World levels, are the two nations submitting single-host bids.

They are joined by a pair of bids consisting of multiple host countries. The Asian basketball-crazed territories of Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines are teaming up in one, while Americas’ neighbors and basketball fanatics Argentina and Uruguay make up the other.

Other nations interested in being a part of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 have until the end of August – when Candidature Files are to be submitted – to join any of these existing candidacies.

Over the coming weeks and months, each candidate’s parties and stakeholders have the opportunity to meet with FIBA representatives for a workshop during which all potential aspects of the bid, hosting requirements and legacy elements will be discussed jointly.

The scheduled timeline calls for the remaining steps in the process to be as follows:

Workshops with Candidates to discuss rationale and requirements as well as legacy aspects of any candidature;
Candidates preparing and submitting their Candidature File in which they outline all specificities of their bid;
Visits to each candidate nation by the FIBA Evaluation Commission in order for it to assist bidders, assess each bid and report to FIBA’s Central Board;
Submission of signed Host Nation Agreement and Signed Guarantees;
FIBA awarding and announcing the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 host(s) as per decision to be made by Central Board at its end-of-year meeting.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup is breaking new ground in 2019, when it will be staged in China for the first time ever and feature a record 32 teams.
