After the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, China which will be held in September 15-25, 2011 (2012 London Olympics Qualifier), the core of the Smart Gilas National Basketball Team will have a revamp since most players have applied for the PBA Rookie Draft and will surely be top picks.

The Smart Gilas program has been extended until the 2013 FIBA-Asia Championship which the top three teams will qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

Chris Tiu

Marcus Douthit and Chris Tiu will lead the new Smart Gilas Team along with Greg Slaughter and Aldrech Ramos. Other names have popped up on the list of Smart Gilas players like Kiefer Ravena, Bobby Ray Parks and more collegiate players.

Who do you think should be included in the next Smart Gilas Team?

  4. josh says:

We need naturalized players around 2 more, maybe african 7’2″ and a 6’6″ to 6’9″ shooter plus more Filam/ Fileuropeans to get more european style of basketballs. More big pinoy shooters ala Caidic types not 1on1 players na puro dribble…. more fast passing and can shoot face to face with a defender… GO GILAS!!! Hope 3-5 guys from draftees return to the Team, International level is better!

  5. Dayne16 says:

I hope you guys win. Pray always, do your best and God will do the rest!!
Go Gilas!! Go Pilipinas!! Show them what we’ve got!!

  6. anonymous says:

add also van opstal, torres, nuyles and norwood as the next smart gilas team members

  7. anonymous says:

my next smart gilas team members are: douthit, slaughter, fajardo, van opstal, torres, ramos, aguilar, parks, nuyles, ravena, norwood, paul lee and amer baser as reserve pg

  8. Gilas Guy says:

Douthit and Tiu should be joined by a pool that includes:

    Bobby Ray Parks
    Ronald Pascual
    Calvin Abueva
    Greg Slaughter
    Aldrech Ramos
    Ian Sangalang
    RR Garcia
    Kiefer Ravena
    Kevin Alas
    Norbert Torres
    Arnold Van Opstal
    Chris Camus
    Jeric Teng
    Jerick Fortuna
    Kevin Ferrer
    Mike Silungan
    Nico Salva
    Alex Nuyles
    Lester Alvarez

I’m also hoping San Miguel can lend Arwind Santos to the Gilas Team. Hopefully Coach Rajko can develop the named PGs in the pool, just like what he did with Barroca and Casio.

  9. Bebotte M. says:

why not practice like the chinese, koreans and japanese systems of shooting, they are deadly shooters not like our Smart Gilas, preferably does with their one on one type of play, more on dribbling and lousy passes, three point play is more important. accdg. to reports koreans are doing routinary shooting for 1thousand shots before having regular practice in basketball.

  10. Rudy Paulino says:

Players who can shoot under pressure is a must as what we saw in the last FIBA Asia championship. This is the reason we lost important games our inside players got tired and our shooters could not connect.

  11. Baller says:

    My depth chart

    Starters-
    Center- Marcus Douthit
    Powerforward- Japeth Aguilar
    Small Forward- Kelly williams
    Shooting guard – Chris Lutz
Point guard – JV casio/ Gabe Norwood

    Sixth man – Chris Tiu

    Backups-
Center – Greg Slaughter (will improve)
    Power Forward – Ranidel Deocampo
    Small forward – Mac Baracel
    Shooting guard – Marco lassiter
    Point guard – Jimmy alapag

  12. n/a says:

I think everyone has forgot about Chris Banchero and Norwood. Banchero has NBA talent and people are sleepin on him bc he was hurt this yr, trust me, he could be focal point for sure. Norwood can play, he’s a force out there. If you get a naturalized player or 2, that could help. There also a BIG time guard who plays at Shoreline College in Washington that is a sleeper as well.

  13. anonymous says:

congress should pass a law mandating any player or a school to release their potential players if needed, and failure to do so is punishable by law if chosen to play in any discipline not only for basketball to avoid the case j fajardo of uc

  14. joy says:

    i want kiefer ravena!!!!

  15. jigsaw says:

maganda kung mas madaming fil-am or fil-european na players para hindi talo sa height at galing ang pinas

  16. dude says:

i think the gilas 2.0 will mostly be PBA players since the PBA teams already agreed that they will loaned their players for our NT.
this is the players that i want to be on our NT:

    C – Marcus Douthit
Greg Slaughter (he must improved his post-up game)
Sonny Thoss (possible addition at 6’8)
PF – Jay Washington (hope he will be healthy again)
    Kelly Williams
    SF – Japeth Aguilar
    Ranidel de Ocampo
    Kerby Raymundo
    SG – Ray Parks, Jr.
    Alex Nuyles
    Chris Lutz
    Marcio Lassiter
Aldrech Ramos (he should be train to become an explosive shooting guard. he already had the height(6’6) and the shooting. he only lacks the speed and penetration.)
    PG – Chris Tiu
    Paul Lee
    Sol Mercado
    Calvin Abueva
    Gabe Norwood

I dont include Keifer Ravena on my list because he is undersized esp in international games. And we all know that he is not a pure PG. he is too short for SG position even at PG position.

i want smart gilas roster to be like this…

    marcus douthit (c)6’10
    greg slaughter (c)7’0
    junmar fajardo (pf)6’10
    japeth aguilar (pf)6’10
    kelly williams (sf)6’7
    sonny thoss (sf)6’7
    cliff hodge (sf)6’6
    chris ellis (sg)6’4
    bobby parks jr.(sg)6’4
    marcio lassiter(sg)6’4
    chris tiu (pg)5’11
    jv casio (pg)5’11

    starter
    marcus douthit(c)
    japeth aguilar(pf)
    kelly williams(sf)
    chris ellis (sg)
    jv casio (pg)

a great roster height is not problem anymore with this roster

  24. Boom says:

    BTW

I’ve watch Junmar Fajardo and Bobby Parks Jr. Fajardo may substitute Slaugther as he got better lateral movements. These guys are good too. Ravena is short and is not a natural point guard.

Cyrus Baguio, Miller, Alapag, Caguiao, Norwood, Williams and Raymundo has shown their skills even in international competetion. Plus they are reliable shooters. Unlike Yap, Lee, Devance and de Ocampo who’re a bit slow for FIBA. Caguiao and Seigle may be old but their experience will give stability to the team. While new breeds like Lutz, David Mercado and Washington are the most consistent player in the PBA. So with this line up and with good coaching staff plus proper training and conditioning 2013 Smart Gilas will go a long way. Good luck to you guys!!

    Boom
