Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V Pangilinan (MVP) announced today that FIBA Asia has awarded the Philippines the rights to host the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship from August 1-13, 2013. The top 3 teams in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship will qualify to play in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. The last time the Philippines hosted the FIBA Asia Championship was in 1973 or 40 years ago.

SUGGESTED FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 LINEUP:

PG: la tenorio, gabe norwood, jared dillinger(he played PG at fiba asia cup)
SG: jeff chan, larry fonacier, gary david
    SF: arwind santos, kelly williams
    PF: junemar fajardo, japeth aguilar
    C: marcus douthit, greg slaughter

THIS IS A BIG AND FAST LINEUP. EXCELLENT OFFENSE AND DEFENSE. I HOPE MARECOGNIZE NYO ITO SMART GILAS COACHES AND OTHER STAFFS.

Lalo na ang fromtline. Sana ito ang frontline kasi yan ang weak position natin. Fajardo slaughter douthit sa height. Williams and aguilar sa quickness.

    FIBA / OLYMPIC ROSTER

    PG: Tenorio; Yap; Chan
    SG: Fonacier; Abueva; Santos; David
    C: Dhoutit; Peek
    SF: Williams; Aguilar
    PF: Fajardo; Slaughter; Eman

    COACHING STAFF:

    HEAD: Erik Spoelstra
    ASST: Chot Reyes; Yeng Guiao

Yap and Chan are too small compared to world class SG’s like Kobe, but are going to be efficient guards nonetheless, let them handle the ball along with LA. Santos and the others will be better for SG, but will have to work his ass of to adapt and play in the international stage, the rest will be comfortable in that position. Wiliams is also too small to be a SF (to match LBJ level) but we’ll have to go with his speed and strength. Aguilar is a bit inconsistent, but he had a shot at the US NCAA and should know how to play at this level – and we need his height. For the PF, the twin towers like Fajardo should handle the paint.
Dhoutit and the aging Peek will be the muscle under the boards.
We ought to maintain 75% of the line-up be Filipino, or at least with identifiable Filipino last names, so drop the guards like Norwood and Dillinger since we have surplus of talented guards. I also prefer those who have Filipino roots to steer the Gilas, in contrast when Rajko Toroman was appointed the RP Head Coach. Let the 2-Time NBA Champion Miami Heat Coach gets the Phils. be recognized in the world stage. Chot could help with the offense sets and Guiao, with the bruising defensive tactics.
