The 2017 SEABA Championship will now be held from May 15-21 instead of April 23-30 to accommodate local players from the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) and the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL).
FIBA’s Central Board held its first meeting of 2017 on Friday-Saturday 27-28 January at the House of Basketball and it proved an extremely productive two days with a number of major decisions taken as well as a wealth of information shared.
New Competition System
The Board was brought up to speed on the most recent developments leading up to the launch of the New Competition System in November, which will open a new era for basketball worldwide.
FIBA on Sunday announced it has reached an agreement with TV5, a major Filipino commercial multi-channel and multi-platform network, for exclusive rights to FIBA national team competitions over the course of a five-year period.
From 2017 to 2021, TV5 will broadcast action from the Continental Cups as well as the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Additionally, with FIBA’s New Competition System coming into effect in November, TV5 will be the place to follow Gilas Pilipinas and other national teams from all over the world as they set out to qualify for the first 32-team edition of FIBA’s flagship event taking place in China in 2019.
After failing in the bid to host the 2019 FIBA World Cup, Philippines will try again this time as co-host of the 2023 FIBA World Cup with Indonesia.
Starting 2017, there will be a new FIBA Competition System featuring Home and Away games for National Teams. This means Gilas Pilipinas will play at home during the window periods from 2017-2019.
