What’s Next for Smart Gilas?

After finishing 4th place in the FIBA Asia Championship, the Smart Gilas program must continue even if the core players will go on to play in the PBA. The previous Smart Gilas players can still be used as reinforcements in future tournaments but a new core of players must be trained again.

Smart Gilas will not play in PBA 3rd Conference, taps 4 PBA players

Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman confirmed that Smart Gilas Pilipinas will not play in the upcoming PBA Governors Cup starting June 2011. Smart Gilas will join the Jones Cup in August.

Toroman also requested 4 players from the PBA to help them in their quest for an Olympic slot this September in the FIBA-Asia Championships. The 4 PBA players are Jimmy Alapag, Asi Taulava, Kelly Williams and Dondon Hontiveros.

Smart Gilas Pilipinas led by Marcus Douthit with 16 points and 26 rebounds defeated All-Filipino Champions Talk N Text Tropang Texters, 103-98. This was the 1st game of Smart Gilas in the PBA and they showed that they can compete with the PBA teams.

7 players scored double figures for Smart Gilas as they shared the ball well under the system of Coach Rajko Toroman. Marcio Lassiter also scored 16 points while Chris Tiu and Aldrech Ramos both scored 15 points. Smart Gilas had 27 assists in the game and limited TNT to 40% shooting from the field.

Import Paul Harris led Talk N Text with 25 points.
