Uichico to coach Smart Gilas in SEABA Tournament

Smart Gilas Assistant Coach Jong Uichico was tapped to be the Head Coach of the Smart Gilas Team (Maybe mixed from Smart Gilas Cadet pool and Smart Gilas PBA Pool) that will play in the South East Asian Basketball Tournament which is the qualifying tournament for the FIBA Asia Cup.

Game Highlights:
– 40 point win by Smart Gilas who led since the start of the game
– Chris Lutz led the team with 20 points and 6 rebounds (14/15 from the free throw line)
– Japeth Aguilar contributed 19 points and 5 rebounds (9/11 from the field)
– Seldom used Dylan Ababou scored 13 points and had 4 steals, 3 assists and 2 rebounds
– Marcus Douthit scored 11 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and blocked 4 shots
– Philippines held Indonesia to only 30% shooting from the field and 9% from the 3-point range
– Philippines with 17 assists to only 4 by Indonesia led by JV Casio with 4 assists
– Philippines committed only 13 turnovers the entire game while they had 14 turnovers in the 1st half yesterday
– All 9 players scored for Smart Gilas
– Marcio Lassiter was sent back home and will miss the SEABA tournament due to a back injury

Smart Gilas starts training again without 4 PBA Players

Smart Gilas Pilipinas started training again minus the 4 PBA Players who will be available only after the PBA Governors Cup. Asi Taulava of Meralco Bolts, Dondon Hontiveros of Air 21 Express and Jimmy Alapag and Kelly Williams of Talk N Text Tropang Texters all suited up at the start of the PBA 3rd Conference.

The next tournament for Smart Gilas will be on June 23-26 for the SEABA Tournament in Jakarta and the Jones Cup in August to be held in Taiwan.

The team is down to 10 players with Greg Slaughter and Aldrech Ramos playing in the UAAP Season 74 for Ateneo and FEU respectively.

Top three finishers qualify for the Wuhan meet in September 2011, which will serve as a qualifier for the 2012 London Olympics. Expect the same lineup for Smart Gilas as the FIBA Asia Champions Cup minus Dondon Hontiveros and Asi Taulava who opted to play in the PBA Governors Cup. Jimmy Alapag and Kelly Williams are now practicing with the team but will only be available after the PBA 3rd Conference ending in August.
