Gilas Fends Off Pesky Chinese-Taipei

Gilas Pilipinas, in the confines and comforts of home, took a while to get going, and they needed a certain four-time PBA MVP to finally find their bearings.

With the nationals struggling early, June Mar Fajardo came off the bench and gave the team a much-needed boost, scoring often against an overmatched Chinese-Taipei frontline. The gentle giant from Cebu led the team back from an early 14-point deficit, scoring 9 points and sending counterpart Quincy Davis to the bench due to foul trouble.

A pained look crossed the face of Kevin Braswell, the playing coach of the New Zealand team when Dondon Hontiveros, hot as fire swished in three triples in an overtime game in the 37th William Jones Cup held in Taipei a few weeks ago.

Hontiveros is now a four-time National team member as he makes it into the the 12-man Gilas line-up of coach Tab Baldwin, who’ll represent the country in the upcoming 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.

Before coaching Smart Gilas, Rajko Toroman was the coach of the Iran National Basketball Team who won the Gold in the 2007 FIBA Asia Championship in Tokushima, Japan and participated in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Gilas Pilipinas may face Jordan in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, SOuth Korea.
