What’s Next for Smart Gilas?

After finishing 4th place in the FIBA Asia Championship, the Smart Gilas program must continue even if the core players will go on to play in the PBA. The previous Smart Gilas players can still be used as reinforcements in future tournaments but a new core of players must be trained again.

All Smart Gilas players picked in the 1st round of the PBA Draft

Congratulations to the Smart Gilas players who were all drafted in the 1st round in the 2011 PBA Rookie Draft. Congratulations to JV Casio who was the 1st overall draft pick and will be teammates with Marcio Lassiter while Chris Lutz will go to recent champion Petron. Point Guard Mark Barroca was picked by new team Shopinas Clickers while Alaska gets Mac Baracael. Meralco picked Jason Ballesteros while Dylan Ababou was picked last in the 1st round by Barako Bull (Former Air 21).

2011 PBA Rookie Draft will be held on August 28 at Robinsons Place, Manila. The Smart Gilas players will still play in the FIBA Asia Championships in September and will go back to the PBA team that drafted them.

The Powerade Tigers will have the 1st pick overall and may select JV Casio.

– Japeth Aguilar contributed 19 points and 5 rebounds (9/11 from the field)
– Seldom used Dylan Ababou scored 13 points and had 4 steals, 3 assists and 2 rebounds
– Marcus Douthit scored 11 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and blocked 4 shots
– Philippines held Indonesia to only 30% shooting from the field and 9% from the 3-point range
– Philippines with 17 assists to only 4 by Indonesia led by JV Casio with 4 assists
– Philippines committed only 13 turnovers the entire game while they had 14 turnovers in the 1st half yesterday
– All 9 players scored for Smart Gilas
– Marcio Lassiter was sent back home and will miss the SEABA tournament due to a back injury
