“I understand the Search Committee is scheduled to meet this week. In this light, I humbly request that my name would not be considered by the Committee as a candidate for the national team coach of Smart Gilas Pilipinas. This will allow the Committee to do its work unencumbered, take a broader view of other potential candidates to this national job, and enable the Gilas program to move on unfettered. Indeed, it is time for someone else take over the wheel; it is time for me to hand over that wheel.

New Gilas Pilipinas Coach and Players to be selected by SBP

The Gilas Pilipinas Head Coach and Players will be re-evaluated by a committee formed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. It is still possible that the committee will still recommend Coach Chot Reyes and the rest of the Gilas Pilipinas Players.

SBP Meeting

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Manny V. Pangilinan, in a board meeting Tuesday at the PLDT Makati office, has proposed a “participative and consultative approach” in the initial selection process for future national teams to address at least nine international tournaments scheduled for 2015.

Among the events set next year are the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in June and the 28th FIBA Asia Championship in China in August which will serve as the regional qualifier to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.
