Current and Former Gilas players dominate PBA Opening
Game 1 – Smart Araneta Coliseum
Japeth Aguilar led Ginebra with 18 points while LA Tenorio contributed 17 points as Ginebra beat San Mig Coffee in the opening day of the PBA Philippine Cup last November 17, 2013. Former Smart Gilas Dylan Ababou is back from an injury and scored 16 points while No. 1 pick Greg Slaughter with 10 points in his PBA debut. Former Smart Gilas Mark Barroca led San Mig Coffee with 14 points.
Game 2 in Cebu
Jayson Castro led Talk N Text with 20 points to defeat sister team Meralco who was led by new Bolts player Gary David with 26 points. Kelly Williams is back on TNT and contributed 10 points.

Party Rock Anthem by the PBA All-Star Rookie-Sophomore-Junior Team including Josh Urbiztondo, Rico Maierhiofer, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Chris Ross, Paul Lee and former Smart Gilas players Marcio Lassiter, Dylan Ababou, JV Casio, Mac Baracael and Mark Barroca.
The Veterans Team defeated the RSJ Team, 176-144. Dylan Ababou matched the total of James Yap with 44 points to break Samboy Lim’s PBA All-Star Scoring record.

Smart Gilas players now in the PBA
The PBA 37th Season (PBA Philippine Cup) will start on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Our favorite Smart Gilas players will now play in the PBA (except Chris Tiu and Marcus Douthit).
Powerade is an early favorite with JV Casio and Marcio Lassiter playing together again alongside Gary David. Chris Lutz will be playing with former Smart Gilas Dondon Hontiveros at Petron while Mark Barroca will play with James Yap and is expected to be the main point guard of Coach Tim Cone in B-Meg.
Dylan Ababou and Jason Ballesteros who hardly played for Smart Gilas will have their chance to show their skills with Barako and Meralco respectively. Mac Baracael is a good fit for Alaska and Japeth Aguilar will be teaming up with Smart Gilas reinforcements Kelly Williams, Ranidel de Ocampo and MVP Jimmy Alapag.

What’s Next for Smart Gilas?
After finishing 4th place in the FIBA Asia Championship, the Smart Gilas program must continue even if the core players will go on to play in the PBA. The previous Smart Gilas players can still be used as reinforcements in future tournaments but a new core of players must be trained again.

In Summary:
Good
– 6 players averaging 9 or more points per game, this means ball rotation is good
– So far no player has fouled out of the game in the 1st round, this is crucial since we only have 10 players
– 2-point field goal percentage is 60.5%, but this is due to easy points earned against UAE and Bahrain
– Mac Baracael playing well in the 3 position as well as JV Casio in the 2 position, with the loss of Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter the others are playing out of their usual position. (Sometimes Toroman uses Alapag, Barroca and Tiu at the same time which is really a small line-up)
– Asi Taulava playing well despite his age and a good back up for Marcus Douthit
– Only Mac Baracael is averaging more than 25 minutes per game, Coach Rajko Toromans rotation of 10 players is good and will be very important since games are played almost everyday
Needs to Improve
– Three-point field goal percentage is only 25.6%, we cannot win against much taller players if we do not shoot well from the three-point line
– Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo must step up in their rebounding.
– Free Throw percentage is only 69%, in close games, free Throw shooting is going to be crucial.
– Smart Gilas is averaging 17 turnovers per game which is very high against just one tough opponent in 3 games
