Gilas falls to Iran, ends World Cup with winless record

Robert Bolick vs Iran

Gilas Pilipinas finished a dismal 2019 World Cup campaign winless after getting blown out by Asian rival Iran, 95-75 in Beijing, China.

Veteran big man Hamed Haddadi had his way as Iran outscored Gilas, 45-26 in the middle two quarters for a convincing victory.

Iran qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as well as they finished as the highest-placed Asian squad.

It was only 34-31 early in the second quarter before Iran went on a huge run that made of 49-34, taking control of the match.

Haddadi was an efficient 8-of-12 from the field for 19 points. Usual go-to guys Samad Nikkhah Bahrami and Mohammed Jamshidi added 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Robert Bolick was the high-point man for the Philippines with 15 points. Andray Blatche had 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists but was ejected from the game in the fourth frame after accumulating two technical fouls.

Gilas ended its World Cup campaign losing by an average of 29.4 points a game, a far cry from their inspiring 2014 showing where they had a 1-4 record and had close losses to Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Croatia.
