List of Fil-Ams Ineligible for Gilas Pilipinas

Jordan Clarkson

We keep on repeating and repeating why some Fil-Ams (or Fil-Foreigners) are ineligible to play for Gilas Pilipinas. Most think that if someone is a Fil-Am or part Filipino, they can automatically play for Gilas Pilipinas. If someone asks again, please just refer to this post. Thank you!

List of Fil-Ams Ineligible for Gilas Pilipinas

-Jason Brickman (Born in San Antonio, Texas)

-Christian Standhardinger (Born in Munich, Germany)

In the case of Jordan Clarkson, he still needs FIBA approval and is still considered ineligible, please read: Jordan Clarkson eligible for Gilas Pilipinas?

* Will add more to the list soon
* Those not in the list means we still need verification on their eligibility and it does not mean they are already eligible

The reason why these players are ineligible in FIBA Tournaments is because of a provision in the FIBA rules stating that the player should have chosen their Filipino Citizenship before the age of 16.

The only way these players can play for Gilas Pilipinas is if FIBA approves them as a naturalized player like Marcus Douthit and Andray Blatche, but we can only use 1 naturalized player for each tournament.

FIBA Internal Regulations – Article 3-21a
“A national team participating in a Competition of FIBA may have only one player on its team who has acquired the legal nationality of that country by naturalisation or by any other means after having reached the age of sixteen (16). This provision applies also to any player having the right to acquire a second nationality at birth but who did not lay claim to this right until after having reached the age of sixteen (16)”

Diba Philippines Basketball Association to.

I don’t think its true that if a child is born in the Philippines, he is automatically a Filipino citizen. We follow the jus sanguinis (literally by blood) mode of citizenship so a child must have 1 Filipino parent to be a Filipino.

    • admin says:

Sorry for the confusion, you are correct, what I meant was a child born here to 1 Filipino parent and not all that are born in the Philippines.

Paano sila serge ibaka ng spain at chris kaman ng germany?
Naturalized ba sila? Parang lumalabas ang pag kaaalam ko is they playing as a spanish and german national respectively. Tnx. šŸ™‚

    • Juan Doss says:

  5. RG says:

We should start tapping these Fil-Ams in age group tournaments like under 14 or lower. That way, they can be issued PH passports that will qualify them in future senior national team duties. Hopefully, with Baldwin as overall consultant of all SBP teams, this can be properly addressed.

“… tapping these Fil-Ams in age group tournaments like under 14 or lower… they can be issued PH passports that will qualify them in future senior national team duties…”
Yes, that’s more logical move much like a grassroot development project … we have FIBA Under 16, Under 17 Under 18 … whatever … and who’s playing?

  6. Erwin M. SeƱorin says:

” … Christian David – Filipino-Canadian … ” he for one, maybe SBP can approach him and his family if they are ever interested in representing the Philippines in international play … if so, he can be issued a Philippine passport this early … imagine a grade 10 baller with a height …

  7. klide sunga says:

c sol mercado nglaro nmn dati sa Gilas ah….dats nots!

  8. Atty. Pagalilauan says:

Hindi mag-aapply yang provision sa kanila kasi sa Philippimes, it is jus sanguinis. If your parent is a Filipino, you are automatically a Filipino without need of performing an act to perfect their nationality. Nasa constitution yan.

  9. sol mercado says:

  10. Larry Revillo says:

the next time you make a post, make it complete because its useless if so many names are omitted.
