Smart Gilas Basketball: As seen time and time again in Asian B.Ball, Phi can’t win because they suck at shooting free throws.

    • jonjon says:

I agree with you! they should be able to shoot those free throws as they are practicing it almost everyday, but still i salute the team and i still believe we can do it , just continue the program and add more talented players i think we have now in PBA

      • nope says:

and possibly remove douthit from the lineup. di ko ma sikmura na ang main man at goto guy ng Philippines ay taga america. grabe naman. SHOW SOME PHILIPPINE PRIDE!!! nung world war 2 sa americano tayo dumepende tapos nung nagkasirasira yung bansa. tydings mcduffie agad ang pinakita para pakawalan tayo kasi naging liability na ang bansa. wag kayong maniwala agad diyan sa mga kano. if we want to be accomplished in whatever area, we should stop depending on the western powers and start building a TRUE PHILIPPINE TEAM! same goes with our politics and media. masyadong influenced ng europa at amerika kaya di tayo umaasenso.

        • ChandyGarcia says:

        • Kalokohan_mo! says:

Kung wala si Douthit kangkungan tayo! WTF?! Phils Pride? san sa Pagnannakaw, lies & bad politcs. Nung WW2 under tyo ng Common wealth parang Hawaii & North Carolina. No.1 Tayo sa Asia in terms of economy & sports wala pa magnanakaw.

        • 223424 says:

FIBA Rules Allow one naturalized player. A lot of teams are now having one naturalized player.Even the European Champion Spain has one naturalized player. Wag tayong mag paka hero. Tangapin nalang natin na maliliit tayo talaga.Unfair then naman kung wala tayong naturalized then ang iba meron. It is already part of the FIBA Rules so gagamitin natin ang opportunity para ma improve ang ating team.

          • nope says:

            point taken sir.

          • Gee says:

Uhh @223434 Philippines does have a naturalised player havent u heard of Marcus Douthit 6’11 good scorer defender and rebounder he was a big reason we reached the final 4. So basically were not really weak in the centre spot anymore we just need speed and clutch shooting from the our guards and forwards

    • ChandyGarcia says:

Tama, pero kung iisipin mo, lamang pa rin tayo kasi naiwan ung Iran e. ahahaha may NBA player p nmn cla.

      • webbsligner says:

good point, we beat iran, i hope we keep toroman and his system in place and hope smart doesnt scrimp/mag kuripot after our 4th finish…so uch potential ung future team

      • Duane Bishop says:

Quit comparing to the Jaworski’s coached national team. China and Korea were only the good teams back then. Quit living in the past, because the past was the reason we can’t play competitive basketball anymore.

          • Duane Bishop says:

We are talking about him a a Coach not as a Player. What kind of reason is that? And don’t talk to me about basketball like I don’t know anything. And don’t even try to bring up the silver medal in beijing 1990, any coach in the PBA could have done the same with the same players. as I’ve said before, the teams in Asia back then were not that good compare to the present Asian teams.

Not to mention, he was still playing in the PBA at the age of over 40 when he couldn’t play competitive basketball anymore, he was fortunate he was a playing-coach for with Ginebra, that alone only shows how low-quality was basketball back in the late 80′s to the mid 90′s. Having an old player play for marketing, no to better the quality and level of Philippine basketball, it always has been about “commercial sports.”

U guys never learn, yeah those additions are really good but for f^%&sake, replace Tiu. We need tall and skilful high basketball IQ players. The average height of our players is 6’3, c’mon now? U saw it already… 6’3 player cant shoot with players 6’8 guarding them! They’ll gonna have a hard time. Pls pls pls! Learn from your mistakes. Get some vet pba players that has height, can run the ball, and of course, can defend. I just hope that lineup u presented is not final yet.

    LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.

    • nope says:

i know a lot of people hate chris tiu for his performance and kasi ang isip ng mga tao na si chris puro pogi lang at natanggap lang sa team kasi magandang role model lang o ano pang etchos. pero he is actually one of the few players sa gilas na actually playing for the flag. not to mention that he is really filipino (lahat naman ata tayo may halong espanol at chinese na dugo.). Chris can improve his game and perhaps dapat pure point guard lang siya. ang liit kasi niya para sa sg position sa international play; provided na dedikado talaga siyang maglaro para sa bansa.

      • aesculapius says:

i think Chris Tiu is not an effective point guard based sa nakita ko sa kanyang performance. mas bagay sa kanya ang 2 spot dahil magaling cyang defender ang kailangan lang nyang eh improve ang free throw nya chaka yung decision making nya dahil pag cya na ang nagdadala nang bola kalimitan TO ang results lagi kasi cyang dribble. kailangan cyang tularan dahil sa kanyang loyalty sa team dahil sa pag stay nya dito. cegurado akong magiimprove cya at magiging mentor cya sa mga susunod na players ng team Philippines! and sana kunin parin nilang head coach c mr. Rajko Toroman napakagaling nyang coach! Go Chris! Go Philippines! babawi tayo sa susunod na fiba Asia Championship!! we will continue to support you guys!! we love you all!!

I give my deepest sympathy to the gilas team. You did great, heads up to you. wag po kayong malungkot kung hindi man tayo nakakuha ng wild card sa london olympics dahil hindi po nauubos ang opportunity kung naniniwala kang meron pa, pag nawalan na tayo ng pag-asa doon nauubos ang opportunity natin for olympics birth. basta hanga po ako sa inyo, you made us proud guys.

  5. Lawrence Sulit says:

Smart Gilas did a great job, they were the most prepared Philippine team that represented the country, but unfortunately, it was not enough.. We could have done better, with the program that smart gilas has and if only the PBA teams will cooperate, we could send the most talented team to represent the country. I’m listing here my 15 man pool for the next FIBA qualifiers.

    1. Jimmy Alapag – 5’9″
    2. L.A. Tenorio – 5’8″ He may be small, but he has a big heart, very
cerebral playmaker and consistent 3 point
shooter. can hit big shots in crucial moments.
    3. Marcio Lassiter – 6’3″
    4. James Yap – his shooting is always needed in international play.
    5. Marcus Douthit – 6’11″
    6. Jay Washington-6’7″ Versatile player can play both forward
positions and also can shoot knockdown shots
    outside
    7. Arwind Santos- 6’3″ good defensive player and rebounder, can also
shoot outside. He can guard bigger shooting
    guards of other teams.
    8. Sonny Thoss – 6’7″ Able back up for Marcus Douthit, can also shoot
    from the perimeter
    9. Joe Devance – 6’7″ versatile player, can play both forward
positions, good shooting touch from the 3-point
    line.
    10.Kelly Williams – 6’7″
    11.Ranidel De Ocampo – 6’6″
12.Marc Pingris – 6’4″ good defender and rebounder, quick for his size,
energy guy, can guard multiple positions from
    shooting guards to power forwards.
13.Ray Parks Jr. – 6’4″ talented big shooting guard, he also showed
what he can do during last youth olympics (3
    on 3 basketball)
    14. Chris Tiu – 6’0″

    15. Chris Lutz – 6’4″

    COACH – Rajko Toroman

This line up is just my opinion, If only all major basketball officials will commit to help our team and loan their players, I think we could do better in the next FIBA qualifiers. The Smart Gilas Program is in place, We have a good coach with international experience and next should be the most prepared and the best players that the Philippines has.

    • gilasfan says:

      I agree…

      • Duane Bishop says:

We should not pick players because they play good in the PBA, some of the bench players in the PBA can play better “inernational basketball” than some starters and all-stars in your beloved PBA. We should base the line-up on how the player’s game could have a strong-consistent-presence in international games. James Yap? Fonacier? Tenorio? Even we give these players more practice they will always be inconsistent, maybe if they started when they were younger they could make a difference. Hontiveros is a steady shooter, better than J. Yap in international games. Tenorio is good but he is not an Alapag who can jump and shoot the three with ease. Fonacier doesn’t play defense, how can he guard taller and quicker guards? Thoss? Too thin to play back up to play defense, if we would still have Douthit, we need a back-up in center position who can play aggressive defense in short minutes. I see that the kind of line-up you and the others proposed were all scorers, we don’t need that kind of line-up, we need some role players, defensive specialist, a designated shooter and a consistent 2nd scorer to Douthit.

        • nardski says:

:) That is exactly my point! in the past 3 PBA backed Philippine Team only a few were consistent players in international baskeball: Centennial Team of Tim Cone : Espino,Duremdes, Meneses and Abarrientos (Caidic but age was a factor).. Jong Uichico’s National team: Hontiveros, Pennisi, Duremdes. Yeng Guiao’s Team Pilipinas : Pennisi, De Ocampo, Raymundo, Santos.. except for duremdes and abarrientos the rest of the players i mentioned who were consistent in FIBA were or are not MVP in the PBA. another consistent player in International basketball but was not as successful in PBA is Rommel Adducul! We need Dedicated consistent players with high basketball IQ who are willing to be trained and work hard for flag and country and they should be paid triple the salaries of those overpaid and over rated PBA stars. high IQ role players-one who totally understands the coach’s system and the game. why not Raise the Salaries of the Philippine Team Players if Commitment is the Issue? -Sigurado makikipagpatayan sila sa tryouts at depensa. That is also the reason why i stopped watching the PBA after repeatedly getting badly beaten by ASIAN countries-walang sustained commitmentn akala nila 1 year preparation lang ay ok na dapat dyan continuity ng basketball system hindi overnight success..

          • nardski says:

we badly need a backup center for douthit. From what i’ve heard there is Slaughter and Fajardo. if it is true then they should hire 2 strength and conditioning coaches (one conditioning coach and one baketball coach) for each individual to build speed, stamina and accuracy. similar to that of pacquiao’s Alex Ariza and Dirk Norwitzki’s personal trainer/conditioning coach. The conditioning coach is to build muscles in the right places and muscles they never used before while the basketball coach coincides with the fundamental post moves and shooting skills their position(Center/power forward) needs. The two must go hand in hand in order for the conditioning coach to device a better and effective program for the players he needs the guidance of an open minded basketball coach in order for his program to work… same with our shooting guards, point guards and small forwards.. Michael Jordan had one, Kobe Bryant has one i don’t see why each of the Smart Gilas players shouldn’t have 2 for each player ;)

          • Duane Bishop says:

Watching the PBA always make me wan’na change the channel, only old puppies watch the game now a days…

          • Duane Bishop says:

EXACTLY!!! Long-term commitments and basketball program for international competition. Smart-Gilas players should get a bigger pay check than those lazy-out of shape PBA players.

          • webbsligner says:

agree ako kay slaughter at fajardo maging backup kay marcus, special attention should be given to these two guys via stregths and conditioning coaches for big men must be afforded these two guys…their role will be that of role players.

larger compensation must be given by smart to these guys for representing flag and country.

get parks and ravena on board for long tour of duty…at least 2 years.

pba reinforcements like williams, washington, devance or santos is needed.

i hear that tiu and aguilar will stay…thats good.

mercado, alapag, tenorio for guards…but i prefer young guards to develop, larger, good IQ and potentially an outside threat…any suggestions?

2 more role players are needed…to be defensive stoppers.

With out the Fil-ams or one naturalized players, just pure Filipino players, I guarantee you that even we practice everyday with your kind of Philippine team will never even reach the top 5 in the next 10 to 15 years in FIBA-Asia, unless our players decide to work-out the way NBA players do. People hate on the Fil-ams due to insecurities, when in fact, these players some people hate have been the reason why the our country still have a good professional league (good but not that good).

I personally have no ill motion towards Douthit’s status as a fil am and as a basketball player; and YES! he did play his heart out but I can’t possibly embrace a player who isn’t a native of the country. As far as dedication is concerned, the probability of Douthit sugar coating his words of loyalty to the Philippines is VERY HIGH! He is no native of the country. I support the azkals however because we were never a ‘soccer country’ and as such it is perhaps wise to import fil ams to play for us and orient the filipinos in playing the sport (the way Europe has been playing soccer). But basketball? Having to rely heavily on an import despite the fact that the country has been playing the game for decades?!… Seems wrong to me.

          • Gee says:

Post nyo pangalan nyo, dpt responsable kau s mga pnagsasabi nyo,
Sad and frustrating, As a basketball fanatic. You let us down guys.

1st. Substitution/Rotation error, (This is very important s crucial games, un tamang pagpasok ng isang player)Nun laban sa Jordan, mganda ang laro ni Casio pero mas bnigyan ng playing time c Alapag knowing n hndi ok un laro ni Jimmy ksi slow pag set up nya s half court nasisira tempo, but against Korea oki un laro nya at hindi k alm kun my nkabasa nun comments k ksi Alapag adjusted s pag setup, pero ngaun naman mas pinapasok c Casio n hndi oki un laro nya.2nd. Pinasok c Mac against Korea, from my comments against Jordan na mgaling c Mac umatake ng zona s shot selection ny within the perimeter pero hindi sya pinasok noon, but this time against Korea hndi ganun ka-active c Mac s depensa, tingnan nyo uli,
naiiwanan sya nun shooter n mainit from korea e ms maliit sya dun, Coach T should have put Mac on Tae Jee Moon (un naturalized) ksi hndi un ganun kabilis and c Lassiter sna un pnabantay nla dun s isa. Against Jordan wala cla mgawa s zona,
3rd. Freethrows, History repeats itself kun hndi tau matutoto, from the tym of Olsen to this time. Mental toughness kelangan dyan ksi wala naman nagbabantay sau, un basics s pag freethrow alam n nla un, Bend your knees and focus s spin ng bola don’t shoot it with most of ur palms, feel the groove ng bola with your fingers and uppermost ng palm then try to spin it,the arc goes with the knees, Try nyo and tell me if I’m wrong.
This sums up what happened and what could’ve been done. From the last two
games they did’nt want it more than their opponents. ‘Yan ang heart of the Champion na cnsbi, hndi pride.

Do you think smart gilas program should continue? I say, Get the Mythical team sa PBA then all the rest s smart gilas program. Under Coach Toroman p din ksi kita nyo naman un systema, S rotation naman dapat handa each player, if you want it, show it. 2 to 3 turnovers lbas k muna.Plus a naturalized with height, Marcus was very good pra na taung may import dun. Disadvantage, hndi din tau cgrdo dun ksi hndi all out maglaro ang mga professionals hndi tulad noon unang panahon nina Loyzaga, Puso ang problema. Kun from the ranks of amateurs naman, un consistency, shot selection, finishing that goes with experience. Also most important, kun nais p din ni Sir MVP mag sponsor, ksi wala naman ibng myayaman n gusto. ksi titingnan mo, iti train un mga napili under the program, gumaling na dhil na expose s international competitions tas papasok sa pro league, nasaan ang patriotism at dedication? Hndi katulad ni Chris tiu na playing for flag tlga, he has done magnificent job on Daghles defensively, pero d k maintindhan kut bkt kinokontest nla jumpshot nun e d nman ganun kgaling s shooting, kmbga focus k lng s depensa ng pag pasa nya.Sympre attracted un iba s money and popularity playing in the pro league,I’m not sure pero somehow affected din un laro nun mga pumasok s pro league ksi prng hindi n gnun katindi mithiin for olympics.

S pro league naman, bka po pdeng mag adjust say at least a conference n i adopt nyo un FIBA style, especially fouls and un zone defense, it’ll help a lot s basketball ntn,nd maybe manood n uli ak ng PBA. With this conference din pkitanggal nun height limit s imports, pra masanay cla n matatangkad klaban, i know hndi ok dito un iba pero ksi nkikita ntn dominating cla pero pgdting s international nawawala, how can we measure up s klaban kun cla cla ngalalaban. Ok un overall performance ng smart gilas, 2 yrs. preparation,un ibng bansa naman 2ld ng Jordan, Iran. how many years un pagsasama to solidify their team. But hndi to un
point, Mico halili,Jason webb,Richard del rosario b un commentator n nerbyoso and saying it was the best finish of our team after 2 decades, the point is they we’re given the chance, un break (kagatin m n), alam naman ntn dba pag playoffs puso n tlga nangigibaw more than skill, I know they played hard against Korea (but not against Jordan-un zone defense issue dun,ala cla mgawa) pero maaring matagal n uli tau mbgyan nun break, un groupings, etc. Kaya gnun panghihinayang namin, It was a heart breaker n nman, Un s finshings naman with the past teams lalo n un all
PBA selections ang taas ng expectations namin pero ala, then how on earth can we be proud of our PRO league, our nation and as an individual, a filipino. we are blinded with the phrase “Iba ang dugong Pinoy”, diba may advertisement p nga using PACQUIAO n cnbing we can achieve coz we’re pinoy, that’s unacceptable.
Where PACQUIAO is, is not bcoz He is a PINOY, It is bcoz of his determination, descipline and most of all with the blessing of God. Do all pinoys posses this? or least do this, I’m am now thinking we Pinoys can’t excel with team plays (basketball) not if we’re pushed to our limits (EDSA revolutions) that’s why as a nation also we don’t go well.(Economy,Politics, etc.).

        • Duane Bishop says:

Even USA needs enough practice now a days, the game is different now. You are so full of it. If Paras and company find the “fountain of youth,” even your Jaworski, do you really believe they can win silver in FIBA playing the present teams in Asia? Maybe if Samboy (my idol) were 6’4″, Patrimonio were 6’4″ with a wider body or 6’7″ with the same frame, Caidic if he could only dribble like a guard and Calma being over 6 feet, maybe we’ll stand a chance. We should not live in the past because people in the 90′s era were also talikng about the same heart-breaking “what if” situation, fans were talking about the silver medal finish with Caloy Loyzaga in the world championship because we were a basketball power… A basketball power during the time when most countries doesn’t know how to play basketball.

          • nardski says:

Duane Bishop, i do get your point if you only read my reply in the other page.. I answered that in fairness to smart gilas team i expected the end results. If only the PBA players were there to practice with them for at least 2 years we would have placed higher and only then would Coach Rajko’s system work. I am a fan of Basketball and understand clearly how basketball is played today as compared to the early years. I am not living in the past glory days of PBA legends, i merely pointed out that the Korea loss was the result of nasty Filipino “NBA” style basketball habits (which is one on one).. I also pointed out that if Cone’s centennial team was prepared and supported like the Smart Gilas was we would have placed higher than 4th as you see that team did not lack in height only in preparation our average height of that team was 6’7 and from the power forward down to the guards everyone could shoot from the outside. They were only prepared for like a year.. how would you expect them to place higher as they were not a cohesive unit as seen in their plays?(but they still ended up 4th place) The basketball world has caught up with the NBA today and I truly support and believe Coach Rajko’s system because he has beaten the Mighty China at a time when we thought that China was Invincible. And coach Jong Uichico’s national team that lost to Korea who eventually went on to beat China? same thing happened to us we faltered in the end game.. but that Korea team had the same average height as our national team at that time. I also pointed out that there are other PBA players who are not suited for the pros but are very effective in International brand of basketball..

Wag na yan PBA!!!!!!!!!!!! PILIPINAS kung PILIPINAS! Get money from all politicians na magnanakaw and Jueteng (legal & kunyari legal). Sign 14 -16 players for Gilas 8 years contract.

    • Sam says:

I agree with the longer years of contract that you’ve said. Kaylangan focused on one thing lang ang maglalaro for the Philippine team, or at least meron silang priority everytime na kaylangan sila.

Lahat naman ng ipinasok ni Toroman sa game ay may skills, and they do good with those skills that they have. Wag na natin ipoint out masyado yung about sa height, hey guys look at the bright side, average height natin is 6’3 but we’re top four sa FIBA-ASIA, di hamak na mas maganda ang tayo natin ngayon unlike the previous years. Maybe the height factor plays a role, but its not a major role. Kung mas matagal lang ang naging dedication and preparation ng lahat ng player ng team for the team, maybe we couldve gotten higher up the ladder. Ang kulang sa kanila ay yung PLAYING-TIME-TOGETHER. Mas magiging maganda ang ikot ng bola, at hindi lang focused kay Douthit ang opensa, kapag alam ng ibang players ang lahat ng plays at ready sila mag step up at any given day, walang magiging shaky fingers na problema pag crunch time.

Coach Toroman must stay. Continuity is the key, hindi yung palit ng palit. The system is there, all they have to do is immerse themselves (the players) into it and be totally familiarized. Maybe add a few bigger and quicker wingmen? And play more international basketball. Kulang lang tayo sa international exposure. The meltout in the 4th quarter is normal and expected. The players werent bonded enough and they dont know the feeling of losing in the dying minutes of the game. You can’t expect a player to have nerves of steel in the crucial endgame kung first timer lang siya… Even PBA player K.Will missed his FTs because he felt the pressure… I am proud of the team kasi kahit 4th place finish lang tayo, we can see na everybody gave their hearts out.

Isa lang ang gumugulo sa isip ko: What happened to Japeth Aguilar? I know he’s on the bench for a reason… What seems to be the reason? I know Baracael was benched because he’s a step slow sa depensa. Is Japeth a step slow too? I hope somebody could explain this….

Smart Gilas, on to 2013 FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONSHIPS! :)

Kahit mag lagay pa filams pa dyan kung under size wala din. nagulat ako 2 guards na below 6ft sinabay tapos frwrd 6’3 ayun mismatch sa 6’7 r 6’8 frwrd. height is matter n’ bzball it’s not a football or rugby games. This is the line-up that we need if we want to advance in FIBA tournaments. What we need are players with heart, length and speed. Players who are not scared and are aggressive in driving to the hoop despite big opponents and also shooters that will compliment the quick guards. We need guards that have a quick first step and break down any defense(remember JJ Barea of Dallas?). I hope all owners will lend their players since it is for the flag. We’re so sick and tired of the RP team not making it in big tournaments. TNX!

kay James Yap naman oo aminado ako sobra galing nya sa PBA pero sa mga power house teams sa ASIA sobra sobra kaba nya (was never consistent in International basketball puro useless fouls pa)Si Gabe Norwood naman na sayang ang height at skills noong last PBA backed national team dahil he was never a factor but more of a liability because he probably was not confident and often lost sa coaching system kaya ayun pag closeup sa kanya ng camera natataranta sya na parang si SISA… Sol Mercado’s style is more suited sa pros unless he proves me wrong. kailangan natin ng backup kay douthit at 2 matitinding pure shooters for shooting guard..

meron pa si Kerby Raymundo at Mic Pennisi noong last 2 PBA backed national team sila lang ang lumaban ng buo ang loob when almost everyone was choking and was being manhandled by Jordan, Iran, & company… nagulat nga ako eh nagpapakamatay sa rebound at depensa tapos yung mga ibang superstars na clutch shooters sa PBA hindi man lamang umalog sa ring yung mga tira nung crunch time

TNX!

  32. To all gilas bashers.. Tigilan na pag down sa team phl, they did the’re best talagang may halong malas lang in the end.. Reaching the semis is already an accomplishment considering the competition ngayon compared to the 70s, 80s and 90s.. When NCC won the 1985 ABC may 2 naturalized americans tayo nun kaya na maximize ang skills nila samboy, allan, hector, etc kasi hindi sila kumukuha sa gunners and china, korea. If not for the americans baka nahrapan din tayo manalo dun. Still nasa record books yun na tayo Asian champions that time. I really hope the gilas program continues, dagdag bawas lang ng ilang players..

  34. Rist says:

I think we need to hire/naturalize 1 more center. Other national teams already know what to do when playing with us. Just remove Marcus Douthit and the paint is clear. That’s what Iran did on the last Jones cup. When Marcus was removed from the paint, their big men are unstoppable.

This is also what Korea did.

Our guys are talented, but talent is not enough when the opportunities are being blocked and taken by much taller guys.

    Our game is very predictable.

Sometimes I think they (Jordan and Iran) just let the Philippines win during the prelims or 1st round so that they will have an easier foe on the semis. Not only on Fiba but also on other tournaments.

Very good tactics.

Worse, Toroman already knew this from the start and is just ignoring or pretending and just kept doing his job to keep the nation’s spirit up especially the fanatics.

The truth is only our naturalized player plays good in our team. It is miracle the our team reached semis and our opponents like japan, and Taiwan doesn’t really play well during there games between Philippines. Our defense is good but the offense suck except for Douthit. We luck composure and easily gets nervous during close fights which are like amateurs. They should be like pacquiao, has the heart to win and always believe in God.
Also the team captain doesn’t really help team during crisis. He should prove himself in a professional league in oder for him be one of best player in country and deserving to be in a Philippine team.

I agree. I think its time for us to focus our resources in sports where we can have a better chance to be # 1 in the Olympics. Boxing, Taekwondo. Anyway, congrats to the Gilas team for placing 4th. Bitin parin.

  41. Venz says:

Eto lng po masasabi ko, like other team in usa, para mpagaling nla ang players nila ay nag scout cla ng player na my potential lyk aguilar, a 69 player whose athletic, but poor s shooting at post up moves, if u rili want to dvelop it u nid sum1 hu cn teach him the moves, dpt mgkaron sia ng individual shooting coach like gnwa ng mavs ky dirk. Gve hm post up move coach para lalo din madvelop, at bata pa naman, like nba players do, they train hard and discpline too. I gues that goes also para sa ibang plyer na ksma smartglas the coaches must focus their skils mre kysa ipakabisdo agd ang system, dhl madali lng po un mkbsado at gwin kung kumpleto sa rekado ng player. Tpos another lyk taulava pero dpt mtngkad pa sa knya. 2 pointguard na tlgang mgling. At c japhet wg nio alisin he is a potential player just needed 2 be dvelop. Peace !

    What’s next for smart gilas?
    FIBA Championnships 2013.
Thanks to MVP, willing p dn syng somuporta sa basketball, most beloved sport by most of filipinos. At sana mkatulong ang point of view ko pra s preparations for upcoming jousts. STEP 1. SELECT THE PLAYERS, MVP qouted He wants a taller point guard, sa mga previous comments ko, things na tnitingnan k for a good player 1.HEART (dapat un all out maglaro at persistent) 2. SIZE (acceptable height at played position, bawasan m un average at max 3″) 3. SKILL. (shot selection, ind. defense, ball handling-eto nakukuha thru training and experiences)- best example ko dito ay si MANU GINOBILI (6’5″+), look at how this guy play, that’s why he excels in both the fiba arena and in the NBA. He has all my parameters. Pede c Gabe Norwood (6’5″)kulang lng tlga sa puso or un intensity s laro(pag drive with tenacity) ang lacking andun n sna lhat.

STEP 2. PREPARE THEM, tama un sbi ng isang fan, we should have specific skill trainer (shooting, defense, post moves) pra ma improve un weakness ng player. expose them s FIBA style, expose them sa PRO style basketball. Now kung mag iinclude ng pro players kelangan tlga ma expose din cla s FIBA style (especially fouls called, defense orientations) A way to do this if we’re getting the main core ng NT from PRO ranks is to adopt a separate conference in the PBA pag may upcoming international events, 1 conference is enough to expose them s FIBA style (pra din 2ng board exams, dpt pagaralan kun ano ang type ng exam).Advantage pag galing s PRO ranks ang players where most talents in our country plays(hasa na, iexpose n lng ng tama ksi example un fouls, akala pde eh hndi nga-disadvantage, hindi allout maglaro, kesyo ma injury). expose din s tall defenders pra sanay o hindi “ilang”. this means alisin un height limit ng imports for this conference, un ibng players n manggagaling s GILAS PROGRAM eto prng investment pr ma sustain ang NT. Dpat all PBA teams ang mag sponsor dito dhil dito din cla mag dadraft just like what happened to LUTZ and others. Kumbga pagpasok s PROGRAM papirmahin n ng contract.

    3. SUPPORT THEM(financial and emotional), bka pede din iinvolve kming fans s pagpili nun players thru online voting, lalakas p lalo hatak ng basketball dito ksi involved un fans.

  44. wens ortiz says:

Heto ang PROSPECTS k based on my parameters.
PG- ave height(INTERNATIONAL LEVEL)- 6’3″- SOL MERCADO (6’0″), ALEX CABAGNOT (6’0″)
SG- ave height- 6’5″- GABE NORWOOD (6’5), PETER JUN SIMON (6’2″), CYRUS BAGUIO (6’2″)
SF- ave height- 6’8″- ARWIND SANTOS (6’6″)
PF- ave height- 6’10″- JAPETH AGUILAR (6’9″), KELLY WILLIAMS (6’7″)
    C- ave height- 7’0″- MARCUS DOUTHIT (6’10″-athletic)
All the rest from the GILAS PROGRAM: Ravena,Parks, Lassiter, Lutz
    POSIBBLE BIG MEN to train,
SAMIGUE EMAN (agile at 6’10″), FAJARDO (good), SLAUGHTER (he needs to toughen up)
Now looking at these talents, cno magsasabing ala hyt pinas, limang players lng ang nsa court, we have acceptable hyt and talent, PUSO (determination n dapat ipakita s paglaro ang kelangan)

Have patience with Aguilar, ma develop lng post defense nya at some post moves (footwork), He’ll be great.
Sol Mercado/ALex Cabagnot- slashers and has good shooting, pero i’m looking for a cerebral point guard like the Flying “A”, mki2ta m kaibhan kya c sol hindi n knuha ni toroman ksi hndi sya effective s FIBA maybe kelangan ny lng masanay.
P.J.SIMON- this guy has the heart and skill, lacking lng s size at 6’2″.
CYRUS BAGUIO- needs to improve his shot selection, turnovers. kelangan ma expose din s true FIBA style.
K.WILLIAMS- VERY GOOD OVERALL DEFENDER, freethrows dpat ksi hindi n sya ipinasok nun ksi crucial tym n,We have the pieces they just have to perform at their best, intensity ang lacking pg s international arena n, so they should be exposed starting s PBA where they play most of the time.

  45. wens ortiz says:

1 more thing, s conference ng PBA na FIBA format. We need to hire true FIBA refs, the game is only as good as the officiating eka nga. Pra close as to real FIBA ang simulation ntn ng mga games so we can select the players n effective s FIBA style, but the bottom of all we need guys that plays with a lot of heart. Thanks and sana my mkabasa from the PBA and all concerned s basketball ntin.

    • bolero says:

  54. nardski says:

As much as I hate reading Recah Trinidad’s Inquirer article because of his often times super negative criticism and Gilas bashing, he always has a point. Like today’s article (Sept. 29 2011) he pointed out that the last 5 shots scored by the Korea squad, 3 out of 5 were shots taken from the so called “wrong foot” practiced by Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and played to perfection by Dirk Norwitzki which in my opinion is Soo True.. If you’re really a fan of basketball and watch the different basketball styles all over the world you will see that majority of the European players use this technique which was popularized by a korean basketball player in the 70′s. I remember back when i was watching the 1990 Asian games and saw for the first time how other asian countries played, my basketball fanatic friends and I would laugh at how funny the Korea and China team played. Their lay-ups and shooting looked awkward and funny (layman’s term “Balibag-Tae”). Unknowingly it would be the foundation of the power house Asian teams like China and Korea and world champoin teams like Spain, Argentina and Germany.. My point is this Basketball Heads in our country should put an end to their useless politicking and have one goal which is to save Philippine Basketball and go straight to the grass roots program. I still hate Recah Trinidad for Being so negative but i still thank him for proving a point and i still read his articles. :P

what do you think of this line-up guys?
i believe that douthit can play power forward. with that, we can have a very tall line-up with slaughter at the center.. kaunting praktis pa at experience kaay slaughter ok na…tingan nyo line-up ko, malalaki di ba… di kaya ng china or korea na hanapan ng mismatch yan… sila ang mismatch sa point guard kay norwood… di kayang i-dominate ni daghles si norwood sa PG gaya ng ginawa niya kina casio and company… on the contrary, si norwood ang magdodminate sa mismatch na ito…

  56. Recah Trinidad is in the payroll of SMC kaya puro nega sa Gilas program yan,

Just like kay hontiveros, fatigue daw kaya nag quit sa gilas, not once nakapasok sa finals team nya pano sya mapapagod?

  60. King JAmes says:

@ craig..damn i totally disagree..cmon men are u even a filipino? those guys played their hearts out for flag and country tpos un lang ang sasabhin mo? wow… i understand the disappointments pero para sabhin n ala tyong dapat ikaproud sa team ntin?? that’s wrong..

I’m very proud of our national squad.. on my own opinion this is the best finished by our national team.. although hindi tyo umabot sa olympics or even sa qualifiers marami p nmng time e ..there’s always a room for improvements.. go Gilas

i think toroman should stay. we have a system which is very effective for international play.we have a good coaching staff. a few suggestions for our next gilas team

    1. dapat ung next players natin ay 6’5 pataas starting from the point guard postion to the center position who can shoot from the outside, can play defense, and can run the floor of course alapag will always be there..like (gabe norwood). e.g

    2. we should train 7 footers who can shoot outside not necessarily threes but can spread the floor.. like aguilar . i believe this young man has a soft touch from the outside

3.we should train greg slaughter for the center position para my kapalitan si douthit sa post..

  61. Monta says:

    Terrence Romeo…pramis.

  62. Venz says:

At last, dba my contrata pa c douthit?

Money at fame ang hinahabol dyan, they lack heart of a true Filipino.

  73. katahimikan! says:

sa tingin ko nagkulang tayo sa no.3 position last fiba-asia sana ipinahiram ng petron c arwind santos at sa power forward c sonny thoss.

  74. KNOTS says:

Filipino players were as good as other countries. We were once a Powerhouse in Asia. Our success in latest FIBA Asia tournament is the best in 24 years. And coach Toroman did a good job considering the limited players he can choose from the pro league. His system works. What lacks in our system is commitment. If We look at the situation right now we are to train again new players. The former Smart Gilas players is now under the terms of their mother teams and that questions their commitment in future tournaments. If you look at other Asian teams like Korea, China and Jordan they have players who play for their national team for 10 years or so. Here our players once enters the pro league its hard for them to commit wholeheartedly into our national team. We might need new players but if we want to become no.1 in Asia it is more than 100% commitment.

  75. WATCHER says:

Height is might in international competition. If we got much taller player with talent the better. Pagtiyagaan nating i-train sila Jopeth Aguilar, Junemar Fajardo at Greg Slaughter, isama narin nating itrain as pointguard si Gabe Northwoods dahil may height at talent sa ball handling ang bata. I’m disapointed pag napapanood ko sa RP 5 laging may 3 maliliit sa arena, example nalang laging magkasabay sila Tiu, Barroca at Alapag or Casio respectively, do we think they can depend the frontline of our opponent which is 6feet 5inches or more? It’s time for us na sana ma notice ng coaching staff and management ito. It’s only my opinion coz i love this sport and for the love of our Country. God Bless the Philippines!

  76. Christopher Cipriano says:

  77. maui says:

toroman should stay, douthit.. tapos tanggapin na natin na kailanagn natin si douthit kukang tayo sa height . there is no such thing as filipino pride here.. if you are a fan of basketball and analyse the situation .. we need big and athletic players to match china, korea and middle east countries like jordan and iran… we have the talent no question about that but we need a player like douthit.. we neeed 2 or 3 more .. va bene .. ragazzi?

  78. prince says:

we need long term basketball program. ang hirap sa atin gusto tayong manalo pero kulang tayo sa preparation.we don’t need douthit anymore but we need best trainer in terms of bigman position so that we can maximize our bigman like. Greg slauther, Junemar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, samague eman,Gian Chui, sonny thoss, jason balesteros. sa wingman & point guard position wala tayong problema marami tayong talent in our country but we long term basketball program. kailangan at least 8 year program everyday may practice & it need also many international exposure.

  79. prince says:

we don’t need toroman marami tayong magagaling na coach tim cone, chot reyes, norman black, joel banal, coach yeng but we need to give them enough time to prepare.
