BOCAUE — Gilas Pilipinas put up a spirited effort but lost steam in the end to fall to Dominican Republic, 81-87 in a historic yet bittersweet FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 opener at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

Bannered by Minnesota Timberwolves all-star Karl-Anthony Towns who tallied 26 points and 10 rebounds, the Caribbean nation fought toe to toe against the World Cup co-hosts before pulling away in the fourth quarter with key baskets and stops.

Gilas Pilipinas defeated host Cambodia, 80-69 in the finals of the 2023 SEA games Basketball to capture the Gold Medal. Justin Brownlee again led Philippines with 23 points along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Chris Newsome played well and contributed 16 points and 4 assists while Marcio Lassiter with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, CJ Perez and Christian Standhardinger with 9 points each.
